Figure 1 shows Southend pier in about 1905. Look at the thickness of the ice — a demonstration, if you needed it, that the density of ice is less than that of water.

During the 1860s and 1870s roughly two pleasure-piers were being built per year in the UK. This was in response to people having more disposable income, paid holidays and bank holidays on which to enjoy themselves, and a growing railway network that could get them to the coast for a day out.
