Here we celebrate the 100th birthday of the nuclear model of the atom. As well as showing how to estimate the size of a nucleus using Coulomb’s law and energy conservation, this article illustrates how science works through the interplay of theory and experiment, and through the operation of the scientific community.

Each new year naturally heralds the anniversary of everincreasing numbers of events. In 2011, for example, it will be 50 years since the wonder-drug Valium®was invented, and 150 years since Linus Yale patented a bit of kit that graces and secures front doors to this day.
