Examining basic ideas in physics

Some examination questions can look simple at first sight because they are asking about very basic ideas that you use a great deal throughout your physics course. Momentum is an example of such an idea. Isaac Newton formulated his second law of motion using momentum way back in 1687 and it has formed one of the central concepts of mechanics ever since. For example, you may have used Newtonian mechanics to explain the behaviour of ideal gases.

This question explores this area and tests fundamental understanding along the way. It is taken from OCR Physics B 2863/01, January 2010, Question 12, and is reproduced by kind permission of OCR. The answers that follow are the responsibility of PHY SICSREVIEW and have been neither provided nor approved by the board.
