Car designers use an understanding of physics, such as springs, simple harmonic motion and conservation of momentum, to give a ‘smooth ride’.
If you were to build a car and connect the wheels to the car body without using springs, you’d have a very rough ride. In this article we see how car designers use physics to make the ride much more comfortable (Figure 1).
