Preparing for marathons is not just about the running, but about the lifestyle you lead. It is quite a ‘monk-like’ existence that can be difficult to master.
In my quest to reach my full potential I made the difficult decision to give up my teaching job and become a full-time athlete in the run-up to London 2012. The change in lifestyle was a shock but it was necessary in order to accommodate the proper rest and recovery, stretching, massage, physiotherapy, gym work, physiology testing, sports psychology, altitude trips etc. It is about leaving no stone unturned and giving yourself the best chance of success.
