From 23 July to 3 August 2014, 4,500 athletes from 70 countries will compete across 17 sports as part of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Compare this to the inaugural British Empire Games in 1930, when 400 athletes took part in six sports, and you can see that the event has come a long way.
Since 1930 there have been many changes to the sports, athletes and most obviously the name, but certain aspects that highlight the individuality of the event remain. The original philosophy of the Commonwealth Games was to bring together the countries of the British empire, leading to the event being dubbed ‘the friendly games’.
