Elite sports performers face huge pressures to perform to the highest standards, and often take risks or make questionable decisions in an effort to succeed. The pressures include potential loss of sponsorship, loss of reputation, loss of bonuses for winning or simply a loss of points. In trying every possible way to gain an advantage over the opposition, some performers undertake aggressive acts. This article explores some of the reasons why aggression might take place and what a coach or manager can do to control or prevent such acts, thus promoting more acceptable, assertive behaviour.
