The Lions tour occurs once every 4 years. Rugby union players in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales regard selection as the ultimate honour. Former Lions and England captain Martin Johnson describes the successful tour to South Africa in 1997 as a greater achievement than winning the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

Months before the touring party was selected, Lions support staff made a reconnaissance visit to Australia. Serving a similar purpose to a preparation camp, the trip allowed detailed planning for the tour, including logistical matters such as where the team would stay and train, transport and even how the players’ laundry would be done.
