Throughout my international career, which is now in its 22nd year, I have taken great pride in the fact that I am mentally tough and have the attributes required to deal with the potential stresses of international competition. Elite athletes come in all shapes and sizes from a psychological perspective, but I feel I have developed an approach that allows me to function and race all year round without feeling mentally drained or needing a break.

My approach to training gives me the mental resilience to compete all year round. Cycle races can last for up to a week and I generally race at least once a week between March and October. It might sound mentally exhausting to be competing so often, but one psychological tactic I have found useful is to remind myself how much I enjoy what I am doing. In fact I enjoy it so much that I don’t have to remind myself all that often!
