When I started playing volleyball at the age of 14 I never dreamt my involvement would lead me to represent Team GB at an Olympic Games. Volleyball is the second most played sport in the world after football, although it has a much lower profile in the UK. Prior to 2005 the home countries competed separately as England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, so Team GB volleyball didn’t even exist.

As a PE teacher at Chellaston Secondary School in Derby I was attending a school meeting when it was announced over the tannoy that London would host the 2012 Olympic Games. At that time I had no idea of the impact it would have on my life. I had not played volleyball for over 16 months since starting my teaching career.
