There has been much talk about the legacy of the London Olympics. Here, we look back at this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games and identify how you can use them to better understand concepts in the AS and A2 specifications.

What does the 2012 medal table tell us about elite sports systems? A look at the final table (Table 1) shows that, although a country that follows a decentralised elite sports system — the USA — topped the table, the vast majority of nations in the top ten are advocates of a more centralised approach to elite sports preparation. In nations such as China, Germany, France and Hungary, Olympic and Paralympic athletes are funded directly from their national governments and most of their training and support services are provided by state-run institutions.
