How does UK Sport fund its athletes?

Kim Johnson gives a detailed insight into UK Sport and its athlete investment from 2009 to 2013

London 2012

As the strategic lead body for high performance sport in the UK, UK Sport invests around £100 million of National Lottery, tax revenue and Team 2012 funds each year in British Olympic and Paralympic sport and athletes. About £11 million of that is distributed directly to athletes via an Athlete Personal Award (APA). There are almost 1,500 athletes on the World Class Performance Programme (WCPP) across Olympic and Paralympic sports, approximately 60% of which receive an APA.

An APA is a National Lottery-funded grant to support progression of athletes on the WCPP through to the podium at an Olympic or Paralympic Games. Athletes cannot apply directly to UK Sport for funding — they must be on the WCPP for their national governing body (NGB) and must be nominated to UK Sport to receive the grant.
