In the late nineteenth century Britain was the birthplace of many modern sports, including football and rugby union. The middle and upper classes made up the elite of these sports. Their emphasis on ‘playing sport for the love of it’ was a basis for the unwritten ‘amateur code’, which they guarded fiercely when the pressure to professionalise sport started to increase. Sportsmanship, i.e. conforming to the written rules and unwritten elements of sporting etiquette, was a key element of the amateur code.
