This column will improve your understanding of what it takes to write effective Section B and C answers from the perspective of a performer. The written part of your A-level PE coursework has equal weighting (i.e. 10% of A-level) and counts for just as many marks as your practical performance (60 in total). Indeed it also has the same weighting as each element of your academic work on the exam, as the exam counts for 30% of your A-level grade and each of the three sections covered are equally weighted. Therefore it is worth making a real effort to complete it fully and in as much detail as possible to ensure you get a good mark and as high a grade as possible.
For Section B you need to select four skills/ techniques and two tactics/strategies from the sport and role in which you were assessed for your practical. Two of the skills/ techniques must come from assessment area 1 (AA1) and two from assessment area 2 (AA2) of your assessed activity. AA1 is normally the ‘attacking’ aspect and AA2 is normally the ‘defensive’ aspect in the case of many games. In other sports it may be ‘event 1/stroke 1’ and ‘event 2/ stroke 2’. The important thing is to look at the specification to find out exactly what assessment areas 1 and 2 are for the activity you are being assessed on for Section A of your coursework — ask your teacher if you are unsure.
