Sky Sports

Transforming televised sport

TOPFOTO

When Sky Sports was launched 20 years ago, the pre-launch advertising campaign promised that it would ‘change the face of televised sport’.

Indeed, it has replaced terrestrial television’s live coverage of Premier League football matches and Premiership rugby union matches, as well as many other sporting events. Sky Sports is great for sports fans, with its dedicated 24-hour coverage of a vast array of different sports such as badminton, football and cricket. Perhaps the key to its success was the acquisition of Premier League football in May 1992 — possibly the best domestic league in the world covered by one of the most inventive sports broadcasters. Sky Sports’ advancement in the use of technology in sports coverage has been particularly innovative and has benefited performers, spectators and officials alike.
