The study of biomechanics in sport is essentially the physics of sporting movements. This area focuses on the kinetics (forces, moments, power etc.) and the kinematics (angles, speeds, accelerations) of the athlete as they perform the sporting movement. It uses concepts of physics and engineering, as well as knowledge of human anatomy and biological structures, and applies this to provide a greater understanding of how the athlete moves (Hay 1993, Bartlett 2007). Sports biomechanists have two primary concerns:
