Stretch and challenge

Mike Hill shows you what’s required in the AS PE exam.

This article will look back at last summer’s Edexcel AS paper in order to see the lessons that need to be learned and help you prepare for this year’s exam. Copies of past papers, mark schemes and examiners’ reports are available to download from Edexcel’s website (www.edexcel.com). They are a good place to start as you prepare for your examination. The examiners’ reports pick out the key errors that candidates made in the previous exam and often give tips and advice on how to avoid these in the future and give the best possible answer.

The report for the 2010 AS examination states that candidates found the paper accessible both in terms of the style of questions set and also the time allocation. This is supported by the absence of blank answers to questions or incomplete papers. All of the structured questions were scored as maximum-mark answers by some candidates, indicating that the questions reflected the specification accurately. This also indicated that when candidates struggled to answer these questions it was as a result of a lack of preparation or understanding.
