Eat well, move more, live longer

The Change4Life campaign, started and supported by the Department of Health, aims to encourage people in the UK to lead healthier lives.

In the twenty-first century inactivity and unhealthy diets have become the norm from an early age, causing obesity and health problems related to this later in life. This article looks at some programmes forming part of the Change4Life campaign, launched this year. It describes how the campaign works with partners in a bid to tackle childhood obesity.

People are a lot less active than they used to be. With so many opportunities to watch television or play computer games, and so much convenience and fast food available, we don’t move as much or eat as well as we used to. As a consequence, nine children in ten could be growing up with dangerous amounts of fat in their bodies. This can cause life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, type II diabetes and heart disease. Many people believe it is important to try to do something about unhealthy lifestyles — which is where the Change4Life initiative comes in.
