Leadership is a fascinating area that attracts a lot of psychological research — with few satisfactory conclusions. We often recognise good leaders because of their high media profile or their largerthan-life personalities but good leaders do not always have these characteristics. Whatever makes a leader, there is no doubt that they can influence others, not always towards functional behaviour. Recent accusations about the behaviour of some rugby players, for example, in pretending to be hurt for a ‘blood substitution’ have been traced to the influence of one or two influential leaders. The success of teams — whether they be Premiership football teams like Manchester United or successful cricket teams such as the England women’s cricket team and their recent World Cup victory — have often been linked to excellent leadership.
