The Whole Sport Plan for netball

Paul Clark explains how England Netball sees netball developing as a sport at all levels over the next few years.

There is sometimes a perception in the netball world that, as a governing body, our emphasis is on the top end — that is, on the national team, the under-21s and the talented athletes. What we have tried to do with our Whole Sport Plan (WSP) is to redress that impression and demonstrate that the heartbeat of the organisation is our clubs and our membership.

Netball means different things to different people and our plan is about understanding those different motivations, working with the people at grass roots, and investing where it improves the quality of their experience. Not everybody wants to play, or is able to play, within the traditional club structure, and Back to Netball has shown that there are many potential players who would like to get back to the game but are constrained by circumstances. So we need new games, recreational and social, and more links to school, university and community netball — giving netballers the widest possible choice and a first class experience.
