From ET to Olympic gold

Andy Wrathall examines how Sir Chris Hoy has gone from racing BMX bikes to being a quadruple Olympic gold medallist.

Born in Edinburgh in March 1976, Chris Hoy was inspired to start cycling at the age of 6 after watching the film ET: The Extra Terrestrial and becoming obsessed with the BMX bikes featured in the film. A year later he was racing them and continued to do so until the age of 14 when he switched to track cycling.

As a teenager Hoy was more than just a talented cyclist — he also rowed for the Scottish junior team, finishing second in the 1993 British Championships in the coxless pairs. However, at the age of 18, he decided to concentrate on achieving his goals on a bike.
