A history of athletics

Symond Burrows traces the history of athletics from its pre-industrial origins of pedestrianism and race walking to the twenty-first century.

OCR Unit G453 provides you with the opportunity to choose an Historical Studies option in Section A. Athletics is a case study activity, requiring an understanding of the development of athletics from pre-industrial Britain, through the public school influence of ‘hare and hounds’ and then on to its rationalisation as a sport from the late nineteenth century. Twenty-first century developments are also considered in terms of both grass roots initiatives and the rewards available for the best athletes in the world. The main purpose of this article is to guide you through these stages.

Pre-industrial Britain was based on agriculture. A number of key features of the period were reflected in athletics (see Table 1).
