The influence of public schools on the development of sport in the UK is an important topic area for all the major exam boards.

Large numbers of middle-class schoolboys attended public schools in the nineteenth century. These schools played an important role in the promotion, organisation and spread of sport and games. The characteristics of these schools — many of which were single-sex, fee-paying boarding schools with access to large grounds and strict disciplinary procedures — and their impacts on sport and games are outlined in Table 1.
