The notion that a skill can be learned or affected by the knowledge of other skills is one of the earliest concepts in the study of skill acquisition. In 1901 the identical elements theory, suggested by Thorndike and Woodworth, stated that the more similar the elements of an already learned skill are to those of a skill being learned, then the more likely it is that those elements can be used in the learning process.
