Dr James Morehen examines why and how combat-sport athletes cut weight ahead of a fight

Please note, this article discusses topics of a sensitive nature, including weight loss

Combat sports include boxing, mixed martial arts, judo and taekwondo. Each discipline requires fighters to display unique skills to be competitive, for example, boxing and hand speed, judo and grappling, taekwondo and kicking. But all disciplines have one factor in common — a weigh-in — and various factors can impact the weight cut.

Professional boxing normally requires fighters to weigh-in the day before they fight, whereas judo and taekwondo can require fighters to weigh-in on the same day as competition. This article will focus on how professional boxers approach this crucial period.
