The development of National Governing Bodies in Britain from the mid-nineteenth century onwards is an important topic area for all the major exam boards.
Britain’s position at the centre of the British Empire and improvements in transport networks may have contributed to the standardisation and codification of the rules of many games in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This resulted in the creation of many national sporting institutions — the National Governing Bodies (NGBs) that still exist today — and soon led to domestic and, later, international competition across all sports. Improved transport, notably the railways, allowed easier movement of spectators and touring teams (particularly in cricket).
