The international nature of sport means that elite athletes are required to perform in a wide range of climatic conditions, and high temperatures present a specific physiological challenge. In 2022, the Commonwealth Games and UEFA Women’s Euros took place during a particularly hot British summer. More extreme conditions were experienced during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which was played in November and December to avoid the dangers of competing in temperatures of over 40°C typical of the summer months in the region. In this article we look at the challenge of performing in a hot climate and how athletes and their support teams prepare for this.
