An interview with Holly Bradshaw

Sue Anstiss talks to Holly Bradshaw — Britain’s most successful pole vaulter, consistently ranked among the world’s best. Holly is currently the British pole vault record holder, indoors and outdoors, and won Bronze at the Tokyo Olympics

SA Holly, I tried pole vaulting myself once in 1985 when I was at Loughborough University, before you were born, and it was a very interesting experience. How did you get started in pole vaulting?

HB It is a funny story actually, because the more I reflect on it, the more it is just like the stars aligned, and I am so grateful that there was the opportunity there. I’d always been a really sporty child doing gymnastics and football at high school, anything that I could do — badminton, rounders, I even tried cross country! I started an athletics club at the age of 14 when I was transitioning out of the football season. I started with the hurdles, and I trained for that once a week and then did a bit of the high jump and the shot put — whatever they kind of needed me to make up the numbers.
