AQA, Edexcel and OCR all require knowledge of the importance and role of carbohydrates in diet, nutrition and energy systems.

Carbohydrate is one of the most studied areas in sport and exercise nutrition, resulting in well-established guidelines and recommendations for athletes. Recently, elite athletes have implemented new in-race fuelling practices without scientific evidence to support these practices. The purpose of this article is to first look briefly at carbohydrate guidelines for marathon runners before focusing on the emerging scientific research arising from the introduction of these new strategies.
