Sporting Minds UK

The mental health charity Sporting Minds UK was founded in January 2020 by 19-year-old Callum Lea. The charity’s mission is to raise awareness and provide support to enable positive mental health in young sportspeople, which Callum himself, through personal experience, had found lacking

The sporting environment can be a tough one, filled with pressure and uncertainty. It’s hard enough to bear without also having a mental health issue such as anxiety or depression. Sport-related and nonsport-related issues can easily creep into a young athlete’s life, damaging their overall wellbeing and potentially their future career.

The original mission of Sporting Minds UK (SMUK) was to provide and fund direct one-to-one mental health support for young sportspeople aged 16 to 30. With Covid-19 impacting on so many sports and sporting events, as well as the actual athletes themselves during 2020–21, this has been a key area of the charity’s work in the first 2 years.
