How does the autonomic nervous system respond to exercise?

Thermoreceptors respond to changes in internal and external temperature

Regulation of heart rate and control of breathing are key topics on the AQA, Edexcel and OCR specifications.

When we exercise, our heart rate increases, as does the depth and rate of our breathing. Blood gets diverted to the working muscles from other parts of the body. When we stop exercising, these systems are returned to their resting status. The mechanisms that control these changes, and the regulation and/or control of the functions of the body during rest and exercise, are common components of all the exam specifications for A-level PE.
