Periodisation explained

Richard Hunwicks, head of performance at the Catalans Dragons rugby league team, discusses periodisation, tapering and training cycles

Periodisation is relevant to the AQA, Edexcel and OCR A-level PE specifications.

The concepts of periodisation, macro, meso and micro cycles are all relevant to and used in professional sport. Tactical periodisation refers to working within the constraints and realities of the sport that you are in. In rugby league we have to taper weekly because we have to play 32 games in 34 weeks during the competitive season. To peak physically every week is very difficult. This differs from an Olympic cycle, where you potentially only need to peak once every 4 years, or perhaps 2 years if you include World Championships. In rugby league, we have mini peaks all the way through the season.
