Sports commentators often use the term ‘pressure’ to describe the intensity of the competitive environment and how it affects the performer. Capacity to inflict pressure and capability to manage it are cited as major outcome determinants.

To audiences, the term conveys a situation in which temperament is threatened and tested. However, it does not indicate the psychological processes that are inferred by the allusion of pressure.
