Forces during linear motion

Andy Wrathall explains the forces behind movement in sport

Linear motion is movement in a straight or curved line, with all body parts moving the same distance at the same speed and in the same direction. For example, 100m and 200m runners both travel with linear motion even though the 200m runner travels around a bend in their race.

There are a number of forces that impact on the linear motion of an object. Before examining them, it is worth recapping Newton’s laws of linear motion.
