Association football is affectionately known by millions across the world as ‘the beautiful game’. But over time, as winning has become ever more important, it has shown a dark side as well. Many top-level players have made their name as ‘hard-men of football’ by being overly physical and on occasions overly aggressive.

Footballers have been known to ‘attack’ on the field of play for a variety of different reasons, whether in retaliation against a refereeing decision, the verbal abuse of a fan, or the delaying tactics of a ball boy.
