Technology and data integrity

Technology can be used to monitor exercise by elite performers or foundation participants. John Dullehan discusses performance analysis technology in the sports and recreation sector and highlights the quality of the information generated in terms of data integrity

By monitoring individual players’ data using motion sensors, teams can avoid social loafing in team sports

The AQA specification includes the metabolic cart for gas analysis, indirect calorimetry, GPS, motion tracking (hardware and software) and blood lactate sampling. An awareness is needed of how these technologies could have a positive or negative effect on the performer, coach, official and spectator. AQA also refers to quantitative objective data and how to maintain data integrity.

The specifications for OCR and Edexcel refer to laboratory testing and direct gas analysis. They also expect an understanding of how modern technology has allowed greater monitoring of the performer, which has improved participation, technique performance and safety.
