Dean Halford on skill acquisition

The effective and efficient performance of motor skills is a key part of any sporting performance. In an interview with PGA golf professional Dean Halford, Adam Morton considers how we can classify, learn and develop skills

This ‘Exam focus’ considers the topics of skill classification, feedback, guidance, types of practice and stages of learning in the context of golf. Your exam board specification will contain additional detail and you should familiarise yourself with the different types of skill transfer, feedback and guidance, as well as methods of practice and the characteristics of the stages of learning.

Try to apply your understanding to different sporting examples and your own experiences, reflecting on how you have been taught new skills and the guidance and feedback your coaches have given you. The more you can associate the theory with your own experience, the stronger your ability to recall and apply the theory of skill acquisition will be.
