Applied movement analysis

Edexcel

Movement analysis can be used to explain and improve performance. Adam Morton demonstrates how you can apply the principles of linear and angular motion to sporting events

The principles of linear motion can be used to analyse sprint performance

Linear motion can be defined as ‘movement in a straight line’. Angular motion can be defining as ‘movement around an axis’. The 100 m sprint is probably the purest act of linear motion in sport. Angular motion can be explained in the context of diving.

The key aspects of linear motion are speed and acceleration, both of which you may be familiar with from GCSE physics. Speed, measured in metres per second (ms–1), can be defined as a body’s rate of change of distance. The equation used to calculate speed (speed = distance/time) can also be rearranged to calculate distance (distance = speed × time) or time (time = distance/speed).
