The autonomic nervous and neuromuscular systems

The autonomic nervous system regulates the function of our internal organs, such as the heart, and also controls some of our skeletal muscles. It works involuntarily, which means that things take place that we do not notice. For example, while playing basketball we don’t tell our muscles ‘we need a bigger contraction to jump high to rebound the ball’ — the nervous system will do this automatically.

The movement of muscles during exercise is controlled by the brain via nerves. The neuromuscular system is the nervous system and the muscles working together to allow movement. Changes in the neuromuscular system take place before, during and after exercise. These changes prepare the body for exercise and allow for the changing demands of different intensities of exercise.
