Sublime talent is a rare gift that is bestowed on only a few people. The gods of sport, enterprise, science, humanities and entertainment are often fearless in their prime and the ease with which they learn and excel in their chosen field is enhanced further by their motivation, dedication and hard work. But as I once thought after a painful loss in the second round of Wimbledon qualifying: ‘How much easier is it for Björn Borg to train for 6 hours a day when he knows his sweat and toil leads to the biggest prizes in tennis, whereas my reward is a relative kick in the proverbial?’
Sport teaches optimism, perseverance and most importantly humility, because defeat is always part of the game no matter the level. It trains the brain to find intrinsic value in all the training and matches. There would be no sense in taking part if victory was the only purpose.
