Sunday 23 August 2015 was a worrying day for the world of athletics. It was the final of the men’s 100 m in the World Championships in Beijing and four of the finalists had served bans earlier in their careers for failing drugs tests after taking illegal substances to try to enhance their performance (Box 1).

Usain Bolt was the one man who could beat these ‘cheats’, but his form was uncertain and he wasn’t at his best coming into the race. In the build-up Sebastian Coe, now president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), said that the prospect of the favourite Justin Gatlin winning made him feel ‘queasy’.
