The Rugby World Cup is one of the newest international sporting events, but it has already grown into reportedly the third largest in the world. 2015 will be the eighth running of the tournament, which began in 1987. Despite its recent development, the Rugby World Cup’s values date back to the codification of sport in the public schools.
Rugby folklore claims that in 1823 William Webb Ellis (whom the tournament’s trophy is named after) picked up the ball during a game of football at Rugby School and ran with it towards the goal. Despite there being little evidence to support this claim, it is widely believed.
