Commonly known as football hooliganism, spectator misbehaviour has been an issue for police forces, politicians and sociologists for many years. It can be argued that football hooliganism is a form of social conduct ‘created’ by politicians and the media — newspapers, television and radio. It covers a whole spectrum of behaviours ranging from verbal violence, through obscene and intimidatory chanting to fighting with or without weapons. Where weapons are used, these range from stones and bricks to sharpened coins, knives, distress flares and even guns.
