Elite-level sport is full of examples of top performers who have gone to extremes — often beyond the laws of the land as well as the rules of sport — to achieve their ultimate goals. Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson is one infamous example of this, winning gold at the 1988 Seoul Olympics in a new world record time, but subsequently failing a drugs test (see www.goo.gl/iuIwc8).
To many, however, it is not just about winning gold, but about inspiring others to compete fairly, adhering to the morals of sport set by the amateurs of the past.
