According to the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF), the world governing body for athletics, a sprint event is defined as any competitive event between 60m and 400m (i.e. 60m, 100m, 200m and 400 m). This definition also includes all the hurdles events.

Through his extensive research into the biomechanics of sprinting and hurdling, America former athlete Dr Ralph Mann has suggested that the sprint events can be split into four main areas, with some areas being further split into subsections. These are:
