The American football Super Bowl and the 2014 Winter Olympic Games were the outstanding global sporting spectacles of early 2014. Both events, despite cultural differences, served up images of memorable athletic prowess, raw courage and diverse behavioural responses from competing athletes.

This article is written essentially from the perspective of the OCR exam board and covers areas outlined in the AS and A2 specifications. However, information relating to academic theories will have relevance for students studying other exam board specifications.
