The ‘Tsarist Russia, 1855–1917’ unit is popular because, in addition to the fascinating study of tsarism and the last three Russian monarchs, it provides the background to the formation of the USSR. It is also useful to study alongside government and politics or economics, because it focuses on a country making a choice between conservative monarchy, liberal democracy and revolutionary Marxism, while undergoing an industrial revolution almost from scratch.
The examination contains three pairs of questions, from which the candidate must select two pairs. In each pair, one question is worth 12 marks and the other question is worth 24 marks.
