Edexcel’s ‘The experience of warfare in Britain’ unit covers the period from 1854 to 1929, focusing on the Crimean War, the Boer War and the First World War. The unit considers events on the battlefields, but also the social change that war caused, specifically the development of the media, the erosion of privilege among the elite, and the new opportunities for British women.

In the exam you will be asked to answer a single question in two parts. The 20-mark part (a) tests your ability to cross-reference sources as well as to consider why different sources from the same period present different accounts of the events they describe. Part (b), which is worth 40 marks, examines your ability to integrate sources and your own knowledge to formulate an argument. The exam lasts for 1 hour and 20 minutes. You should spend a third of your time, including any extra time you might have, on part (a), and the remaining twothirds on part (b).
