OCR’s ‘Churchill, 1920–45’ unit focuses on Winston Churchill’s political career in government, on the back benches and in opposition during this period. Candidates are required to understand Churchill’s changing political role in the context of the time. The unit also focuses on Churchill’s political beliefs, including his view of empire, and the related issue of Britain’s role in the world. Finally, candidates are required to make a judgement on Churchill’s success as prime minister during the Second World War.
The exam for this unit lasts for 1 hour and 30 minutes and contains one question in two parts, accompanied by five sources. Part (b) is worth more marks than part (a), so candidates are advised to spend a third of their time on part (a) and the remaining two-thirds on part (b).
