This module focuses on the social and cultural changes that occurred in Britain between 1959 and 1975. One of the key questions that it addresses is to what extent British attitudes towards moral issues were transformed. The 1960s is often remembered as a time in which Britain underwent a social revolution, resulting in a growing tolerance of ‘difference’, such as an increasing acceptance of previously taboo sexual behaviour, or changing attitudes towards issues such as divorce, abortion and drugs. However, you should not accept this view uncritically. You need to investigate whether Britain did become a ‘permissive’ society, and how far the rebellion of the 1960s reflected the thoughts and actions of Britain as a whole.
‘Britain had become a “permissive society” by the early 1970s.’ Explain why you agree or disagree with this view. (24 marks)
